Iranian President Hassan Rouhani made the comments in an address to a ceremony marking the 33rd anniversary of the liberation of the strategic southwestern city of Khorramshahr from the occupation of Iraqi forces during the eight-year war on Iran in the 1980s.
President Rouhani noted Khorramshahr now served as a ‘symbol’ and any time another section of the country came under occupation, economically or scientifically wise, the nation must unite to liberate it from the enemy’s occupation.
“Today, our economic sector as well as our oil market, has been occupied by the 5+1 group and the UN Security Council. We need to resort to diplomacy as a tool to bring about the removal of the unfair restrictions,” he said.
The United States and the European Union have imposed several rounds of economic sanctions on Iran over its peaceful nuclear program despite Iran’s commitment to its obligations under the international treaties on nuclear activities.
The Islamic Republic and the 5+1 group of countries – the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China – wrapped up their latest round of talks in Vienna on May 22 in another effort to close the remaining gaps and reach a possible final nuclear deal by the end of June.
The two sides reached a mutual understanding on Tehran’s nuclear program in the Swiss city of Lausanne on April 2.
